Sonator Oy

Sonator Oy was founded in 1970 by four partners, symbolised by four dots in the company logo (now the four pips on the dice). The original business idea came from Matti Krannila and was to produce ultrasonic devices, which gave the company its name. This concept was soon abandonded, and Sonator ended up translating and publishing technical literature.

The company, that has its office in Tampere, gradually gave up publishing and focused on translating, still primarily on technical content. In the summer of 2007, the business of Sonator was acquired by Maarit Manninen, the then managing director of Sonator, and Hanna Lappalainen. They had both started their career at Sonator as aspiring translators and now expanded the scope of the company's translation services to include corporate communications and marketing documentation.

To celebrate Sonator's 40th anniversary in 2010, the traditional dot logo was given a facelift and the new dice logo was introduced.

Today, Sonator employs also a number of freelancers. The company has built a profile as an expert in technical translation services and a professional in corporate communications, especially in translating/editing demanding marketing documentation. While the field of translation is becoming increasingly more of its own industry, we continue to provide translations that are done by a person instead of a machine.

The four pips on the dice symbolise the four languages we work in (German, English, Swedish and Finnish) and also the four core values that underpin our business and translation policies: appropriateness, punctuality, quality, and correct language.
